A question about Jupiter?

I remember watching on TV about the Schumaker Levy 9 asteroid that slammed into Jupiter in 199something. The asteroid was pulled apart by Jupiter's gravity and many large chunks hit the planet - all caught on film. My question is, I thought Jupiter was clified as a gas planet. How do impacts leave scars months and years later? Thanks.
