Texting long distance for free on iPhone?

Hi, there is an app called PingChat! that allows you to message iPhone to iPhone without the cost of an SMS, however it uses wifi to send messages so it does cost but it works out like 5cents per message or something, I live in australia and text my american friends with it, its great!
